7-inch series, part 679 – Sugarhill Gang

Sugarhill Gang – Rapper’s Delight
label: Sugar Hill/Vogue
year: 1979
side a: Rapper’s Delight (Short Version)
side b: Rapper’s Delight (Long Version)

This was supposed to be the first single I ever bought, but when the big day came (I was going to go to the local record farmer with my class mate Marco O.) I was broke. Ten years old and it had already started. Years later I got the 12″, and years after that I stumbled upon this 7″ which I bought just to spite the ghost of the past. Bastard.

Even though it sounds like the track is sampled entirely from Chic’s “Good Times”, it’s actually Positive Force playing it, the Sugar Hill houseband which featured Doug Wimbish (who went on to be part of Mark Stewart And The Maffia, Tackhead, Little Axe and Living Colour, among others), Keith LeBlanc (Little Axe, Tackhead), Skip McDonald a.k.a. Little Axe and Chip Shearin.
