OK so why not use the usual player? Because I’ve posted about The Chap before, and the good people of Lo Recordings asked me to take down the MP3s. And even though the files posted here aren’t supposed to be downloadable, the last thing I want is anyone to get upset. Luckily, they’ve got the single on their Bandcamp page, so I can still cater to my hungry hordes of fans.

This one’s taken from their previous album Well Done Europe (Spotify), they’ve got a new one out this year, We Are Nobody (Spotify), which is rather good. The B-side, sung in Spanish, is exclusive to the single. I think I bought this one at the gig I attended in 2010 at a really nice venue that doesn’t exist anymore, in Kilburn, London. Don’t remember the name, but they had an official sign on the wall telling people to shut the fuck up when the band’s playing, which I found funny. I was there with my goddaughter (Dutch text, sorry), who I felt was finally ready for the Chap experience. They nailed it, she loved it. All good.

Now they need to come to Spain.

Ooh I love The Chap. This is the second single off Mega Breakfast, although you can find both songs (side B is not on Mega Breakfast) on the mini-album Builders Brew. Which I have not own but soon will. Can’t believe I missed that one. What a silly bunt. Last year they played at the club where I was working at the time. I had gone backstage before the gig to say “Hello, I’m Dave and I want to buy the vinyl of your new and utterly fantastic album”. But there was no vinyl, and there still isn’t.

Which wasn’t nice.

Later on, when they played “Proper Rock” in front of a 35-piece, err, crowd, they caught me by surprise pointing at me when they said the “Dave” in “Art, art, art, don’t make no rave, Dave”. It was a defining moment in the history of Dave, I can tell you.

The B-side is a fun and interesting cover of Tina Turner‘s hit. But of course you knew that already.

Update: Got a mail from the fine people @ Lo Recordings asking me to take down the MP3s, which of course I have. Lover, not fighter, remember? They were nice enough to point me to the page for Builders Brew where you can stream the entire album (including the songs on this 45). And buy it. go on, you know it makes sense.

Zoals gezegd, The Chap wordt over het hoofd gezien. Behalve door mij en de 35 anderen die gisteravond getuige waren van een ge! wel! dig! concert bij ons in da club. Wat een band. Wat een nummers. Wat een humor. En wat ontzettend klote dat hun album Ham en Mega Breakfast – net uit – niet op vinyl zijn verschenen. Schandalig, eigenlijk. Ik hoop dat hun labels nog tot inkeer zullen komen. Ze zouden er verstandig aan doen, want, zo heb ik gelezen, de lp is bezig aan een comeback.

Mega Breakfast is trouwens een van de platen van het jaar. Koop dat ding, je hebt het nodig.

The Chap – I Am Oozing Emotion

Heel fijn popplaatje van een band die op onverklaarbare wijze aan veel mensen voorbijging toen het album Ham uitkwam. Ik heb ze zelf pas ontdekt toen ze geprogrammeerd werden voor De Nachten 2006. De plaat was toen al een halfjaar uit, wat ongeveer twee eeuwen is in slsk-jaren. En dat was dan al hun tweede langspeler.

De twee nummers op de single staan allebei op Ham, maar men vergeve het de band, aangezien het label in zijn oneindige wijsheid heeft besloten het album slechts op cd uit te brengen. Vooral van “Oozing” wordt deze jongen heel blij, maar het hele album is geweldig. Ik heb ze tijdens De Nachten niet kunnen aanschouwen omdat ik moest werken in het andere gebouw (The Chap speelde bij ons in da club, terwijl ik op het gedeelte in deSingel werd vastgehouden), maar ik hoorde dat het heel erg goed was.

Het wachten is op album nummer drie.
