7-inch series, part 697 – Bay Area Funk Sampler

Various Artists – Bay Area Funk Sampler
label: Luv n’ Haight
year: 2003
side a: Sugar Pie DeSanto – Git Back
side b: Fire – Flight to Cuba

Bay Area Funk

Two excellentísimo tracks from the very great Bay Area Funk compilation on Luv n’ Haight. Sugar Pie DeSanto used to be part of Johnny Otis‘ and James Brown‘s Revues and is apparently still rocking it (check the video below). The Fire track is supposed XXXL rare, judging from Jazzman’s comment: “your chances of ever finding an original copy of this 45 in one lifetime are probably slimmer than James Brown performing on the planet Mars with Stark Reality as his backing band.”

So there you go.

Super nice reissue on the fab Jazzman label of the complete recordings of Akron, Ohio’s Soul Toronados (sometimes spelled as Soul Tornados, Soul Tornadoes, Soul Toronadoes and even Sol Tournedos. That last one was a funny joke you can laugh about). These three singles are the only tunes they ever recorded (hence the title of the set) and they were all done in one session, but released on three different labels: Magic City, Burt and Westwood. What happened to the three kids James Smith, Charles Heller and Bobby Heller after that, I don’t know.
