James Pants’ album Welcome was to me one of the highlights of 2008 – a fabulous brew of eighties synths, P-funk, electro, krautrock, hip hop and pure pop. Just the way I like it. So when the Stones Throw Europe 2009 tour came to Madrid last month I was very excited to see and hear him play. Unfortunately, the gig was, err, not really my cup of tea, so to speak. All the ingredients were there, but the mixing went wrong, with a result that was devastating to my ears. Too much chaos on stage, or maybe too much alcohol. The band sounded incoherent and Mr. Pants did little more than yell. It was like watching some band made up of characters from Animal House, but not Bluto Blutarsky, because that would have been kinda fun.
But his records still sound great.
