A new single by my favourite Scientologist, on one of my favourite labels. Can’t go wrong, can it? It can’t. The fantastically titled “I Just Started Hating Someone Today” starts as a country song, then turns punk-ish, than funk-ish. I’ve no idea who the Rick and Thor and Randy he’s referring to are, but “Blue Randy” is likely the one Randy Blau playing “laser tag” on the song.
Beck’s singing on “Blue Randy”, by the way, reminds me of Nick Cave‘s version of Johnny Cash‘s “The Folk Singer”.
According to Third Man, both songs were recorded spontaneously when our hero was working on his new album, with Jack White joining in on drums and vocals. There seems to be a lot of that going on in Nashville. The single is part of the label’s Blue Series, and further features Dean Fertita, Fats Kaplin, and Karen Elson.
