7" Series 728: The Black Belles – Wishing Well

I should do a mixtape featuring only bands called “The Black [insert keyword here]”. It would be really good I think. Not original, but good. I’m going to do it. You only live once.

The Black Belles hail from Nashville, or at least that’s where they’re based. Front woman Olivia Jean’s originally from Detroit. They rose to fame after Jack White discovered them and convinced Stephen Colbert to get them on his show, where they backed the talk show host. They then went on to record the 7″ “Charlene II (I’m Over You)” with Colbert, the triple-coloured vinyl version of which does 600 US dollars on Discogs now. Before that, the girls (then a four-piece, now a trio) were in the video for The Dead Weather‘s “I Cut Like A Buffalo”.

The A-side, “Wishing Well”, is on their self-titled debut LP, “Ms. Black Boots” is a non-album exclusive, like it should be. They both rock.
