Sonic Youth – Helen Lundeberg
label: Sonic Youth
side a: Helen Lundeberg
side b: Eyeliner
Ah, Sonic Youth. Heroes. Brother Guuz asked me to write a piece on them, or rather on their influence on me, many moons ago for the newspaper he was working for at the time. I liked that. For those who do not speak the mighty beautiful language that is Dutch, it was about me being an annoying little music nazi and how Sonic Youth set me straight. Because they did.
The first single posted here is a bootleg with two live versions of tracks off the fantastic Daydream Nation album. “Hey Amy” is actually “Hey Joni” – I suppose the people from the “label” that released it thought it was funny to change the name. Those songs, that whole album will never get boring, even though it’s not my favourite Sonic Youth album. It would probably be were it not for the impact Bad Moon Rising had on me. It blew me away completely. I wonder what would have happened if Daydream Nation would have been my first contact with the band. I would probably have gone completely mad.
No I wouldn’t.
I must say that the past couple of years I haven’t paid enough attention to Sonic Youth. I have been unfaithful to them. I will correct that outrageous behaviour. From now on I will only listen to Sonic Youth with the volume on 11. No headphones. I’m sorry Borja, Bruno, Ariel, Susi, but I have to.
Here’s a video of “Death Valley ’69” played live in 1985 FUCK YEAH.
