The fun we had with these guys. Their gigs were always very, err, let's call them 'eventful', and they had as many avid fans as people hating them. No-one was safe for them, Los Piolines (Piolín is the Spanish name for cartoon character Tweety) made fun of literally everyone (themselves first, of course). Tis a pity they split up, would have been nice to see them again.
This double single in gatefold sleeve is the vinyl version of their debut album No quiero pensar, minus six songs.

Got this as a promo from Jordi at his Wah Wah record shack in Barcelona. He released it on his label, on white vinyl and in a deluxe sleeve. Astrud Gilberto recorded this Bob Dylan cover on the 1971 With Stanley Turrentine album. The Pinker Tones have since gone on to become one of Spain's most successful bands in club land.
Here's a video for a more recent song, "Happy Everywhere":

One of the singles from my mum's collection and one of my favourites when I was a kid - I thought, and think, it was a very funny song. At first I didn't really get the moaning in the break, but that probably had something fi do with my age.
The Piglets were produced by Jonathan King.

Pigbag - The Big Bean
label: RCA

The first time I heard Pigbag's "Papa's Got a Brand New Pig Bag" was on TV. The song was used as the intro of a Dutch program on (underground) youth culture in the eighties called Je ziet maar. My mother didn't like it because they talked about sex and punk and stuff. I was about thirteen so I had to see it, if only to go against my mum's wishes. I always loved the song, and when it was played on school disco nights or even at the carnival parties at the local "alternative" youth club I danced my ass off to it.
Many years later I found the single in some ramsj in Spain and to my surprise the B-side held the sample I was intrigued by on

Esther Phillips - What a Diff'rence a Day Makes
label: Omega
year: 1975
side a:
side b:
I thought I was buying a nice little easy listening tune when I handed the sales guy my three euros in exchange for this here slab of wax, but when I listened to it at home I found it's a extremely annoying disco version of Dinah Washington's classic. Which, by the way, is a version of a Mexican bolero called "Cuando vuelva a tu lado".
The horror, the horror.
I didn't know much about Ms. Phillips but I didn't expect her to have recorded stuff like this. I don't dislike disco, quite the contrary, but this is one 45 I wouldn't have bought had I had the opportunity to listen to it. It's even worse than that übercheesy version of "Night and Day" by Francis Albert I own - come to think of it, I probably got it from the same guy, at some record fair. At least that one has a kind of Loveboaty feel to it that makes me chuckle.

I don't know why I don't know the other ones but Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde is the only Pharcyde album I actually, erm, know. That's three knows in one sentence, I know. I heard Labcabincalifornia when it came out but I guess I wasn't into it. Except for this single "Runnin'" (produced by the mighty J Dilla) which I loved. I bought that ten years too late though as a re-issue, when stores started stocking loads of Dilla-produced stuff after he passed away.

New single, and as usual Domino released two versions with identical A-sides and different B-sides. This time the flips are two live tracks, one of which features Alison Mosshart of The Kills, with whom they're performing Nancy and Lee's "Paris Summer". Which is nice.
Planeet Polly 14/11/2008
New podcast: Planeet Polly broadcast of November 14th, 2008. It was my last one (Planeet Polly will of course continue), Polly herself was there and so was the legendary Mr. Oyl Butcher adding shouts and non-descript, err, comments.
The sound's a bit rough and it's longer than an hour as the guys from Beuling didn't show, so we helped ourselves to an extra twenty minutes or so.

label: Rocket Girl
year: 2008

I saw these guys perform at the De Nachten fest where I was working last weekend - one of the few artists I actually could see. That's the thing about working for a promotor - you spend months preparing and promoting an event, and when it actually takes place you can't really enjoy it because you're working. Nag nag nag.
Anyways, saw these guys and they were awesome, except for the vocals not sounding quite the way they should - too dry, with no effects on them whatsoever. But the noise was good. Really, really loud, although the boys in the band wanted to crank it up to 116dBs (100 dBs was the maximum at the place and "A dangerous sound is anything that is 85 dB or higher" - they're called "the loudest band of New York City" for something). The Jesus And Mary Chain meets My Bloody Valentine meets
Spacemen 3. Lovely. Spent every euro I had in my pocket on the box set, "I Know" single and the self-titled album which is a double LP with one black and one orange vinyl. "I Know I'll See You" is also available on purple vinyl. I'm afraid that if I had had five euros more I would have bought that as well. I am quite idiotic like that. But I hadn't, so no harm done. Good thing I could get my drinks for free though.

Liz Phair - Supernova
label: Matador
year: 1994

Liz Phair was one of the coolest dudettes around back in the day. I loved her album Exile in Guyville - good lyrics, good music. Saw her live and that too was great. Then came Whip-Smart, which featured "Supernova", and after that I kind of lost interest. A couple of years ago she released a self-titled album which I didn't like at all - she sounded way too smooth for my liking and the promotional photos portrayed her like some kind of over-aged Britney-like schoolgirl, which I found a bit embarrassing. I haven't heard Somebody's Miracle.
Exile in Guyville has just been re-issued - if you don't own it yet, go get it it's worth it.

I got this as a present from my girl. She knows me so well. Lee Perry is a hero of both mine and hers, so it was a good gift. It's a collection of some rare and sought-after Scratch productions from the golden era 1968 - 1978, released as a follow-up/companion to the 4-CD box set "I Am the Upsetter". This is how I love my reggae the most: dubby, rugged and rootsy.

This is one of the records my mother must have bought for me and my little brother when we were living in dushi Kòrsou (I also own an LP by them). Perlitas is a children's choir led by singer/composer Rudy Plaate. I think the most famous singer coming from the choir is Izaline Callister - check a video of her singing "Cielito lindo" with Perlitas:
The single makes me want to go back to the island of which I have few but very nice memories. Maybe I should.

Pere Pubill Calaf is no stranger to this site. The King of Rumba had one major hit in The Netherlands and Belgium with "Borriquito", and a slightly smaller one with "Canta y sé feliz" which was Spain's submission for the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest - the year Abba performed "Waterloo"; Peret ended up on number 9.
Peret is the inventor of the "ventilador" (fan) style of guitar playing, as shown in this video (it's in Spanish but you'll get the picture). He's in great part responsible for the popularisation of the Catalan rumba in Spain in the sixties and the rest of the world in the seventies.

Excellent single by the Finnish combo, from their third album Spare Time Machine which according to the band "has received almost as many 'album of the year' awards as it has sold copies." The vocals are by Chris Cote from The Farangs and Solo Adultos. Also check out the hilarious video of their single "Salami Fever".

Now these Pebbles I love. Technically a lot less gifted than yesterday's Pebbles, but all the more fun. This is one of the two singles they released on Planet Pimp. Can't find a whole lot more on the Japanese all-gril band, so I don't know if they released any more rekkids.

The Pebbles - Jane Suzy and Phil
label: United Artists
year: 1972

No idea when, where and why I bought this single. I must have thought the name indicated they were some kind of cool garage band or something. Which they weren't. They had a big hit in the sixties with "Seven Horses in the Sky" - the Belgian Pop & Rock Archives even calls it "probably the best song ever to be made by a Belgian band" - quite a bold statement I'd say. It's alright, though. Unlike this single.

I never was a very big fan of Pearl Jam. Not that I disliked them, I just wasn't as devoted as many people I knew. I am however a little bit proud to have seen them play live at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. It's in fact the only time I've seen them play. That Paradiso date was kind of a secret gig - I think they were playing some big venue elsewhere. I got in for free, lucky as I was to be working at the local radio station (and knowing "the right people"). To my surprise I liked them a lot more than I thought I would - a lot more than their records, too.
It was a short affair though. Eddie Vedder was having problems with his throat, I think they performed six songs or so, some of them half because the poor guy just couldn't cope. I felt sorry for them when they had to stop the show - Vedder looked heartbroken letting his fans down like that, even though it wasn't his fault.
I don't know where I got these singles, I don't think I paid for them. Because I wouldn't.

I got to know two of the Patrulleros pretty well as they were my colleagues at the record distributor I where I worked in Madrid in the nineties. Sometimes we hung out in the suburb where they were living, Villaviciosa de Odón. Loads of bars there but only a few more or less good ones. Loads of bands, too. All of the Patrulleros were involved in several other bands and projects, and one of them, Murky, started his own label Alehop! to release the stuff he liked and nobody else wanted to put out. Their gigs were always very exciting, with all kinds of stuff happening, mostly because of drug and alcohol abuse by both band members and audience. It seems they're still around - I hope so, I'ld love to see them play again.
The early singles remind me a bit of Ariel Pink's sound. Which is nice.
If you understand Spanish, check this video where comic artist Mauro Entrialgo explains where the band took their name from (namely from Angelo Mancuso, a character from John Kennedy Tool's novel A Confederacy of Dunces.

La Captura del Sonido - V/A
[gatefold sleeve, 2CD] - Lovemonk CD 2008
CD I got from my future colleagues. It's a fine selection of songs that according to the sleeve notes captures the spirit of the La Captura del Sonido radio show from Ibiza, hosted by Daniel Peñacoba who's also compiled this disc.
Gareth Dickson - Gareth Dickson
Gareth Dickson CD 2008
Saw this guy playing a fifteen minute set as a warm-up for Juana Molina at the Arenberg in Antwerp. Beautiful, beautfiul music. His guitar play reminds me of Cocteau Twins sometimes. Which is nice. And yes, it's a CD. I know I always say I don't buy CDs but hey, if you want the music and it's not on vinyl, you have to do the right thing and get it on CD. Even if you don't own a CD usable player.
Gareth Dickson - Spruce Goose
Sleeping Man CD 2005
Bing Ji Ling - Home
[white label, promo] - Lovemonk 12" 2008

Makala - Cartoon Tune
[white label, promo] - Lovemonk - 7" - 2008

Juana Molina - Tres cosas
[gatefold sleeve, 2LP] - Domino LP 2002
The predecessor of Son. Wonderful music this lady makes. Wonderful.
Juana Molina - Un día
Acqua CD 2008
Her new album is another sure fire hit at luba's. Too bad it's not coming out on vinyl. Too bad? A fucking shame more like. I asked the people at Domino's what's up, but I get no answer. Now I was forced to buy the CD, and I don't buy CD's.
Limón & Nada - V/A
[transparent white vinyl, 2x10", promo] - Mono 10" 2008
More homework. This is one of the branding things the label uses its sublabel Mono for. It's for some new drink by a big fruit juice producer. Pretty cool they put it out on a double 10" though, and with a couple good tunes on it, too.
Marulasoul - V/A
[gatefold sleeve] - Lovemonk CD 2009
Marula is one of the places I like to go to when in Madrid at night. Classy place where they play very decent music. This CD is one in a series of collaborations between my future bosses and the club.

Marulasoulfood 7" 2008

Soul Vigilantes - Background Noise (ft. Xan Blacq)
[white label, promo] - Lovemonk 12" 2008
Yep! More homework. Edits and remixes by the great Pilooski and Pablo Sánchez, to be released in the next couple months.
Gecko Turner - Manipulado
Lovemonk CD 2008
While we're waiting for his proper new album, Lovemonk released this collection of remixes of tracks from his previous albums.
Watch TV & The Lovemonk Allstars - Wild Safari (ft. Gene García)
[white label, promo] - Lovemonk 12" 2008
Nice little afro-tinged dittie by Madrid-based Ruben García, with a remix by Metro Area's Darshan Jesrani.
Jack White & Alicia Keys - Another Way to Die
[gold-coloured vinyl] - XL 7" 2008
It's kind of a weird track, I don't think they fit too well together. Maybe it'll turn out to be "an acquired taste". But it's on gold-coloured vinyl, so I bought it anyway.
Chip Wickham - Feel Alright
[white label, promo] - Lovemonk 7" 2008
The man has worked with an impressive list of musicians and he's a member of Malena. Funkin' all over the place, this is.
