i had forgotten how depressing it is to come back home from spain. just got in and boy, do i not wish to be here :-(
oh, it will be over in a couple hours i suppose.
had a great time in barcelona. i was originally planning on going to sónar, but i decided not to go after all, partly because of the pathetic money situation, partly because the program wasn't all that special. there's only a couple of artists i would have liked to see/hear, like jamie lidell, prefuse 73 and, err... jamie lidell? did see the matthew herbert big band play live though, which was absolutely fantastic. i couldn't believe my ears when pepe from pias spain told me mister santi carrillo of rock de lux had left the gig before it ended saying it was "mediocre". mind you, this is the guy who's been a director at one of this world's most mediocre music magazines ever.
also, thanx to my buddy david i was able to attend the exclusive sónar opening party which was a live broadcast of gilles peterson's worldwide show on radio one, featuring the gp himself, four live songs by björk which i found excrutiatingly boring [but, so they told me, that's because i myself am excrutiatingly boring, so no worries] and dj sets by laurent garnier, matthew herbert [whom i found the winner of the evening] and der rainer.
i visited my old barrios, saw a lot of people i hadn't seen in years, both from spain and from my home country, the weather was incredible, albeit somewhat sweaty, and even when a interview-weary trevor jackson rejected me, it was still all good. "you're going to get a crap interview out of me now, so let's do it by email," he said, and, "let the guy who comes next get the crap interview, let's just talk a little bit so we can get to know each other a bit and then do the interview stuff by mail." how sweet is that?
the only low point was on saturday night, when my mojito-induced hapiness was slain by the discovery of the state of stolenness of our bikes. cuando os vea por ahí, os saco la cresta, ¡hijos de la repreputísima puta!.
so now i'm home, ready to read a couple hundred emails. i've read two already which i would like to share with all of you who understand our beautiful dutch language: one's from alex @ kindamuzik saying "boots boos", about vpro's club lek host jaap boots [speaking of mediocre] saying stupid stuff about holland's finest, rednose distrikt, and one from my main man dewey forwarding a message from kc the funkaholic to vpro:

Een mislukte grap? Kunnen we het over hebben. Je zou de punkmentaliteit van deze jonge honden moeten herkennen. Schoppen tegen de gevestigde orde, dat is wat ze doen en jij bent daar een onderdeel van. Koos Werkeloos 18 jaar en Sebastiaan 16 jaar.......Kan je het niet aan?
Als optreden niet geslaagd, ik heb uit betrouwbare bron gehoord dat ze geen fatsoenlijke soundcheck kregen ? MPC is iets anders dan een gitaar.
Muzikaal niet veel soeps maar je draait het wel in je eigen programma? Het is je vast opgelegd of ingefluisterd.
Dat geeft mij hoop voor de VPRO die duidelijk aan verjonging toe is. En die zou weleens uit een onverwachtte hoek kunnen komen.
Moet je ook nog een mening hebben over de cd ? Jaap , je moet maar geen analyses maken over muziek waar je geen kaas van gegeten hebt. Over smaak valt niet te twisten maar het is wel te ontwikkelen.
Ga je mond spoelen en je handen wassen!
Je weet niet waar je het over hebt!!
Kom eens uit die zendtoren! Of moeten wij soms ook rustig gaan (in)slapen.

unbelievable how qotsa's rated r album still lifts my spirit. it's like with foo fighters' first album - it gives me the energy to actually get up in the morning. of course, i have to get up anyway to stick the record on, but you know what i mean.

mooi programma toch weer, dit jaar, hmmm...

oh, how i long for those wheels of steel. i want to get back in the spinning game. ideally, getting the same amount of gigs as back in the day when my buddy david and i roamed the clubs and festivals of spain.
but then, this is northern europe. there's so many people calling themselves deejays here, i can't believe it. everywhere we go we hear djs spinning and we say to each other "i can do that" or "this guy sucks, why is he always playing everywhere?" and "we are so much better than this guy", but the fact is, they are getting the gigs, we're not. end of story.
well, no. we gotta fight for our right to play the rekkids we want to an audience broader than, well, ourselves, and our girlfriends, if appliccable. if only to save them [the girlfriends, i mean] from more whining about what should have been.
so i decided to give it another go. thing is, i've never been good at promoting myself. the whole schmoozing game is not for me. i know so many people in "the bizz" yet i can't get myself to kiss their behinds in order to get a gig at some party or whatever. still, that's what you need to do, apart from actually having the skills and the music to justify your appearance, naturellement.
another problem for me is: i can't seem to get it right when recording a promotional set. every time i start spinning and recording a 60 or 70 minute set to send to promoters and so on, something goes wrong. the mixes suck, the records i pick somehow don't really fit in with the others, ... what is that?
the other day i recorded a lickle mix for someone and it turned out really well. so well that i decided to use it to promote myself. but it's a mix of one kind of music, and i play so much more. so i wanted to record another one, featuring other kinds of music. and failed miserably. again. so what's next? do i wait until i coincidentally tape a great set? do i send out just this one and forget about the other stuff?
....
now that i'm reading back all this i ask myself "and why do you think other people want to dance to your records?". the answer is, i don't know. all i know is that i and a lot of the people surrounding me want to hear the kindamuzik we like outside of our own homes. we are not satisfied with what the [antwerp] club scene has to offer. we don't want to hear more electrocla$htrash, boring vocal house or trance. so if others won't play the west-london breaks or nu-jazz stuff we like, we'll have to do it ourselves. surely we're not alone in this?
