storm 2
volgens mij is dit mijn eerste "concert"recensie ooit.
hank!
that fatal day, hank williams' last night according to popcult magazine.
jaaaazzzzzzz
très cool special mix by gilles peterson on radio madrid, brought to you by the heavy üsker, he who did the re-edit of that murder track "futebol de bar" on spain's finest label.
[check that version of nirvana's "come as you are"!]
how can that now?
ehh... ??
the *real* desert storm
went to see dj storm perform the other day. ms. nixed and her hubbie came along, too, as you might have noticed. she [ie storm] was preceeded by red zone's resident djs pan and pressure, of whom pan i liked most. they got the crowd nuff movin', but when storm came on the place just about exploded. apart from playing the loud but always funky tunes she was so much fun to look at. showing off her excellent skillz and clearly enjoying the deejaying, her set was pumping like a motherfucker.
it also made me love the drum&bass again. i kinda fell out of love with the genre a couple years back because it had all gone soul- and funkless, but she played nothing but fan.tas.tic tunes, really hard but with enough ragga and amen breaks to keep luba happy. lovely, lovely, lovely.
week #8
new weekly fav lists online over @ list-o-rama.
update monday night: dewey sakitumi's added. he apologises for his terrible english
update wednesday morning: volga's added. apologies again for badd engrish

went to see the stereo mc's last night in brussels, together with raoul and his better half. it was phantastique, which was a bit of a surprise to me. i didn't think i would enjoy it as much as i did for reasons i have now forgotten. that guy rob birch is pure energy and the ancienne belgique went bazerk. wonderful.
and while we were at it, rado and i decided to do a new project in the very near future. watch this space!
huh?
elephants, mosquitos
so tell me, what's the use of bringing a release one week forward due to piracy problems?
motw
lovely new mix of the week.
in other radio news: basmars' 'fanfare of the warriors' [tracklist here] and volga's destination unknown.

#@$%^&&&**!?!!@#$

new list online here.
basshead
greg whitfield interviews more rockers' rob smith about the beautifullest of all sounds: bass - the final frontier
it was dutch heroes doe maar's "bella donna" that made me fall in love with the bass sound. it's a three-minute-long instrumental track with a break in the middle, with only henny vrienten's bass sounding, echoing. it's extremely simple yet beautiful. there were times that i listened to it every morning a couple times on my walkman while doing my paper round. every time the song came on i stopped and listened, not wanting to be distracted by anything. then i would rewind the tape and listen to the song again, and again, and again, before continuing with my work.
ever since, i have wanted to play bass. i used to fiddle about a bit on my uncle's bass guitar when i was a kid, but i never seriously got around to actually learning how to play it. after doe maar i got into reggae and ska. together with my class mate nicolai i started frequenting the record stores in breda [bullitt, tunesville] and tilburg [king, tommy] looking for new but mainly old roots reggae and dub rekkids. i'm actually still looking for this one record by nicodemus, but i don't remember the title. nicolai had it, it had the heaviest bass sounds on it that i had ever heard in my life, apart from some really raunchy lyrics.
<note to self> should get in touch with nicolai, mabbe he still has the disc</note to self>
after speaking to dr. das a couple weeks ago i decided: this year i'm gonna get a bass guitar.
what a guy
went to see der rainer yesterday night @ the cactus club in bruges rock city. we came in when he had just started, and the first thing we saw was my buddy david's latest release "atítetoca" sticking out of rainer's record bag. we were forced to keep our jackets with us as the wardrobe was full so we lay them on the floor. but since we're responsible thirty somethings now, we didn't dare leave them there to storm off to the dance floor. so there we were, next to the dance floor, trying to dance but not really, and mister trüby was playing one killer track after the other. great set, apart from one really cheesy hands-in-the-air "all children reach for freedom" track. i particularly liked the way he kept his cool when one record he was playing [carlito's stomping d&b remix of koop's "summer sun"] finished before he had the next one ready. on the koop record, carlito's mix is followed by the acapella of the same track, and rainer left it playing [and it was obvious he didn't do it on purpose]. when yukimi nagano was well on her way into the song, the funkiest man in freiburg started the next record, and it sounded pretty fucking cool. the smile on his face was triumphant.
as the mighty gilles peterson once said: "rainer trüby, what a guy!"
cody chesnutt - the headphone masterpiece
it's been out for a while, i think, but i only heard it for the first time this week. cody chesnutt is da bomb. lo-fi soul, funk, rock and brutally honest lyrics on a double cd. did a remake of "the seed" with the roots. cody's a lady's man. if i were a lady, i would fall for the guy. only to be deceived by him, and then hate him afterwards.
i wanna be cody chesnutt.

the new album by luke solomon and justin harris rocks bells. robotic mutant funk with icky bleeps and clicks a plenty, at times reminiscent of early prince but not in a retro way.

<ingezonden mededeling>
SAY IT LOUD
SAY IT PROUD
I'M AN AUTONOMOUS ASTRONAUT!!!!
SPACE TRAVEL FOR ALL!!!
DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE ROCKETS THAT WE'VE GOT, WE ARE
STILL THE JUNGLE AAA FROM THE BLOCK!!!

get your war off
a message from lsdb:
as you may know, feb 15th will stage the biggest anti-war movement, with demonstrations throughout the world to protest against a military intervention in iraq.
i would like to keep a photographic record of the events. the idea is for each marching blogger & their friends to make pictures of the anti-war protest in their city, and send them in with comments to explain why they would like a particular picture to be seen. i am hoping to gather pix from all around the world, and post them online, so that everybody can share these moments.
if you have friends who live in another city where there will be a demo, or if you are not going to any yourself, pass it on! if you think you are able to participate in this project, please let me know: comments or lsdblog@elvis.com
thnx!!
jack martens
hij gaf me mijn eerste bandje van nick cave & the bad seeds.
