when i started deejaying at the tender age of 16, i was dead nervous. it was a place called "het koetshuis", and dutch readers will know what kind of place it was upon hearing its name: a local "bar-dancing" as they used to call them in those days. friday nights were favourite with the local youths [whom i went to school with], saturdays were for the elderly, you know, the thirty-somethings. after two weeks the guy playing on saturdays asked me to do his night as he had business elsewhere, and i said yes.
so there i was, digging the crates [the place had a 5000+ singles collection] in front of two bartenders, the two owners [who both fancied me, the dirty buggers], three elderly couples and a bunch of heavy metal dudes. all of them were retarded, and it showed. one of the heavies, an enormous fella with hair down to his knees, came up to me and told me to play a jerney song, didn't matter which one. surprised, i started browsing the handy catalogue, looking for anything by jerney kaagman [a once famous dutch singer] and her band earth & fire. i played her big hit "weekend", wishing i had brought that ultra-rare promotional 7" featuring kayak on side a and earth & fire on side b, both playing alternative versions of one of their hits to promote the monte carlo car rallye. i remember thinking "now *that* would have made quite an impression", and "wow, never thought those heavy metal dudes would have such open minds". earth & fire were hardly rocking, you know. let alone hard rocking.
when i announced the song [this was bumfuck, noord-brabant, 1986], the long-haired giant walked up to the booth and said "you think you're pretty funny, don't you?".
"what? you wanted a jerney song, didn't you? this is a her band, earth & fire."
"journey, you fuckhead, not jerney kaagman!"

anyways, here's an interview with the guy who did journey's record sleeves, and then some.

went to see nightmares on wax the other day. the new album "mind elevation" doesn't do it for me, but i saw them 7 years ago @ the dr. music fest in the spanish pyrenees and i loved it, so i thought "hell, why not?" amon tobin was playing as well, so if n.o.w. wouldn't cut it, i'd still have amon to fall back on.
"mind elevation" is like musical wallpaper to me. the tracks on it are okay, but i don't feel anything when playing them. which is actually the case with each album i have by them. funny thing: sometimes when i'm out and about and i hear the dj playing a good track, i go and see what it is. it has happened a couple of times already he or she was playing a n.o.w. track, one i have in my collection and therefor should know. but every time i play one of the three albums i own, i just stop listening after a while. i mean, the record plays on, but i don't really hear it anymore. same thing for "mind elevation". wierd, huh?
anyways, the gig was great. the band was smooth, the bass sounded just like i remembered it from that spanish gig, the overall sound was really good and warm, it was a party.
then amon tobin came on. i was curious about what he was going to do, as he told me in an interview that he was going to use this thing called final scratch, a device that allows you to play computerfiles and cds and such like a record, so you can pitch them, do some scratching and so on.
he started out like one would expect: chaotic, trippy, loud, beautiful. but after about 15 or 20 minutes he brought on the hardcore drum'n'bass stuff, the boring kind imho. i waited a bit to see if he was gonna go back to the trippy stuff, and he did, for about 10 minutes, after that he played more monotonous drum'n'bass.
so i walked. the melkweg cafe can be a pretty pleasant place to chat. had a good time re-connecting with old friends, but in the back of my head the disappointment about tobin's gig kept stinging.

ik bespeur onder de lieden wier weblogs, stukjes etc. ik graag lees een zekere koortsachtigheid. men is opgewonden over london calling morgenavond in paradiso. nu heb ik altijd een beetje een afkeer gehad van engelse popbandjes, vooral van die die men vroeger, of misschien nog steeds wel, in het vakje "britpop" stopt. wat me regelmatig onenigheid opleverde met menno visser die tegenwoordig het programma engelse drop presenteert op 3voor12. dat was in mijn radio days bij afm.
maar ik dacht laat ik eens naar menno gaan luisteren, want zijn uitzending van vandaag stond in het teken van de komende editie.
wat een saaie neuzelmuziek. en de enige band die niet neuzelt, the libertines [moet dat trouwens niet uitgesproken worden als libbertiens?] hebben een mij tegenvallende plaat gemaakt.
"tegenvallend?", zegt u, "het is hun eerste!"
nou ja, ik had er al veel over gelezen, de "raaawk!" kreten waren niet van de lucht. maar op plaat vind ik het nogal slappe zever. het klinkt veel te mooi. "raaawk!" klinkt ranzig, niet schoon. valt me tegen, zeker met een ex-clasher aan de productieknoppen.
maar ik denk dat het live zeer wel te pruimen zal zijn, zo klinkt het tenminste. als een echte liveband die op plaat maar niet bereikt wat ze echt willen: het live-geluid vastleggen. claw boys claw, anyone? wel gek dat die in menno's programma geïnterviewde meneer verrijn-stuart dan vindt dat het zo live klinkt, die plaat. smaken verschillen, zeker?
ik heb de plaat na die opmerking nog es opgezet, ik denk dat het het stemgeluid is dat me stoort. de band klinkt inderdaad best wel live, maar die stem ligt er zo gladjes op. nee, ik blijf het een tegenvallende plaat vinden.
die baxter dury vind ik nog wel een beetje interessant klinken, trouwens. daar ga ik eens naar spitten.

ever since my buddy guuz recorded me a tape featuring zappa's "broken hearts are for assholes", i have been singing it out loud on a weekly basis. and believe you me, a lot of weeks have gone by since then.
i love those lyrics, and the song also so easy to sing. once you know the words by heart, of course.
so i was kind of disappointed to see that it's not included in the zappa karaoke thingie i found via zone 5300.
